System Overview

VortexSort uses high-frequency acoustic technology to generate stable 3D vortex flow fields in microchannels, enabling high-precision, contact-free cell manipulation. No centrifugation or labeling required — efficiently removes contaminating particles and optimizes cell sample quality. Compatible with downstream cell sorting, flow cytometry, and single-cell sequencing.

How It Works

Stable, controllable 3D acoustic vortex fields are generated within the VortexSort microfluidic chip. Target cells are separated and enriched without contact or labels based on acoustic property differences. Acoustic radiation force scales with the cube of particle radius while fluid drag force scales linearly — enabling precise size-selective separation by tuning acoustic power.

Application 1: Plasma Exchange

Industry Challenge

Plasma exchange is critical for treating severe immune disorders and organ failure. However, conventional centrifugation and membrane filtration cause mechanical cell damage, membrane clogging, poor biocompatibility, and are difficult to miniaturize.

Acoustofluidic technology generates sound-field-induced acoustic streaming vortices, enabling contact-free, low-damage blood cell-plasma separation — label-free, gentle, controllable, and easily miniaturized.

Application 2: Organoid Sample Purification

Industry Challenge

Large amounts of cell debris and Matrigel residue from organoid pre-processing severely interfere with downstream sequencing and functional assays. Traditional centrifugation and filtration cause significant damage, low precision, and lack standardization.

VortexSort Solution

Using acoustic vortex contact-free manipulation, VortexSort gently and automatically separates single-cell suspensions from debris with high precision and standardization. Rat lung tissue: cell proportion increased from 31.5% to 78.8%, debris reduced from 68.5% to 21.2%. Rat brain tissue: cell proportion increased from 67.6% to 94.9%, debris reduced from 32.4% to 5.1%.
